Earlier this term the Limavady High School community was delighted to learn that we had been designated one of the twelve pilot ‘Specialist Schools‘ in Northern Ireland, our specialism of course being in the Performing and Visual Arts.
This accolade was presented in a special ceremony in Belfast by then Education Secretary Angela Smith. This unique opportunity means Limavady High School will receive approximately £80,000 each year for the four years of the designation and a £100,000 one off capital grant to support the development of the Specialism.
Mr Reilly was keen to stress that this unique opportunity will benefit everyone in the school as well as the local community.
He further pointed out that this school has a strong reputation in the field of Visual and Performing Arts. We have an excellent art department, a thriving dance community and a drama department that goes from strength to strength.
Of course this promotion to specialist school status could never have come about without the hard work of certain individuals. Many thanks must go to the focus group of staff who helped put together this bid as well as the School Council and the PTA.
Furthermore we were joined in this endeavour by the local business community who have contributed £33,000 and we are grateful for their support and encouragement. We look forward to this partnership growing further over the next four years.
In recognition of this achievement the school recently held an evening of celebration to thank all the sponsors and staff involved in this unique award. During the night pupils showcased their work and Mr Reilly once again highlighted what this means not only for the school but the surrounding community.
Quite clearly we are now in a position to offer an excellent quality of service not only to the Limavady Learning Partnership of schools but also to people of Limavady! We are aware there is much hard work ahead but are looking forward to the challenge.
