Local Artist – David McDowell

Hearty congratulations go out to one of our past pupils, and previous Head Boy, David McDowell who has been painting non stop since leaving the High School.

You can find Davids work on display as part of a new Art exhibition in the The Whalley Gallery, Holywood. He’s also got a Christmas exhibition in Canvas Galleries which opens tonight at 7:30pm in Belfast, admission is free to the general public.

McDowell was born in Northern Ireland, 1986. In 2008 he graduated from the University of Ulster with a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine and Applied Art. His works are part of both public and private collections in Northern Ireland.

McDowell’s practice takes the form of figurative oil painting with particular focus on light, composition and colour. Conceptually he plays on the notion of taking a private moment and making it public, where the viewer becomes the voyeur. His latest work explores the qualities cinematic imagery can bring to a painting.

McDowell is influenced by both historic and contemporary figurative painting with particular interest in the works of Pierre Bonnard, Eric Fischl and Damien Loeb.

For more information, and to view some of Davids impressive work, why don’t you pop on over to his Web site www.davidmcdowell.co.uk.
