Mr Dougie Bartlett, Vice Principal, and Mr David Young, teacher of Technology, are off to European Finals in Lisbon after winning the ‘Microsoft NI Innovative Teacher’s Competition’. Their project “Equipping and empowering students for further education and the real world” was a ‘worthy winner’ as the judges found the standard of competition very high.
One of the main judges, Dr. Victor McNair from the University of Ulster and 9 times Innovative Teacher Judge said this about Limavady High:
“The project shows lots of evidence of “Real World” situations through the structures. There are clear links between the work in classroom and people from industry, the community and elsewhere. This is a particularly strong feature of the submission.”
Tom Jackson, Microsoft Programme Manager Northern Ireland another judge went on to say:
“I want to congratulate David on this stellar piece of work but more importantly I want to congratulate his students. They have shown that given the opportunity to be innovative and shape their learning individually, amazing things can be done while still meeting the curriculum requirements of the course. I look forward to working with David in the comings weeks to prepare for the European competition and hopefully bring another winner back to Northern Ireland.”
Mr Bartlett championed Mr Young as they worked for 4 months preparing a very impressive presentation of all work done in GCSE Graphic Products and their new A-Level course. Students’ work at both levels has been recognised as the ‘best in the United Kingdom’ and Mr Bartlett is very keen to ‘elevate this work to a global stage’.
Mr Young said that the work his students have achieved was only possible from the support and innovative teaching environment which Mr MrFarland (Head of Department) has established together with the full backing of Senior Management at Limavady High School. Mr Young went on to say that this is a personal career highlight which has absorbed much of his life in recent months and it would not be possible without the excellent students moulded through Limavady High School.
