Why do we need a wellbeing and mental health strategy?

Limavady High School is an inclusive setting where positivemental health and wellbeing is promoted and encouraged to allow our students to develop socially and academically. We do this by:

• Promoting positive mental and emotional wellbeing by providing information and support.

• Creating a shared understanding of all aspects of mental health.

• Enabling those with mental health related issues to self-disclose and seek support in a safe confidential manner.

• Offering guidance and strategies, along with the support of our Pastoral system, to support students and staff to be mentally healthy.

• Creating a culture to support and maintain positive mental health and wellbeing.

What is the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy?

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy is a guide to define ‘how’ we are expected to support students and staff with mental health and wellbeing and ‘what’ practice we implement to support mental health and wellbeing.

The strategy details the systems in place to ensure that mental health and wellbeing is embedded into our culture to support the students and staff at Limavady High School.

A copy of the Wellbeing Strategy is able by request through the school office.

The Wellbeing Award for Schools

In January 2022, our school started working towards this nationally recognised award. This journey will ensure that we provide the best possible support for all our students and staff.

What is the Take 5?

Here in Limavady High School, we know that positive health and wellbeing are absolutely essential factors for children and adults to thrive.

There is a wealth or research and evidence which shows that there are 5 steps you can take to help improve your mental health and wellbeing. These are connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give.

Pupils learn about Take Five during assemblies and in Personal Development lessons. We also have information about Take Five displayed around school and in the pupil journal.

Here are some ideas for each of the five ways:

Connect

Spend time developing and nurturing relationships with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. It is important to actually have face to face conversations with people rather than relying on social media.

Be active

Try to find an activity that you enjoy and that keeps you active, such as walking, swimming, cycling or playing football. Evidence shows that an improvement in your physical health can help improve your mental health.

Keep learning

Learning new skills can boost confidence and give you a sense of achievement. Pupils should try to get involved in extra curricular activities in and out of school to help with their overall wellbeing.

Give

Helping others, saying thank you or giving someone a smile can help to improve your self-esteem and improve your emotional health.

Take notice

Being more aware of the present moment, the world around you and your own feelings and thoughts can help you to positively change how you're feeling about life. Make a note of the simple things in your life which make you happy.
